UL FIREFIGHTER SAFETY RESEARCH INSTITUTE STUDIES
Take some time to review the scientific report and watch the videos on the UL Firefighter Safety Institute Website. The research is based on transitional fire attack, flow path and fire stream effect on flow path. The Full Scale Study Program is now available as well. This is the culmination of both studies and the application utilizing transitional attacks.
MARCH-APRIL IN-SERVICE
The March In-Service Training will focus on school based emergencies, school pre-planning and Rescue Task Force operations. The videos produced by Mentor Fire on RTF operations and active shooter will be available at your stations on a flash drive or on the city O: drive in the FIRESHARE file under Training.

Please watch both videos and obtain the RTF equipment from 1150. Completely review the jump kits and don all of the gear. Complete the drill confirmation form below when you have finished. Finally, set up a tour of the schools in your area. If you have multiple schools, please make it to 2 of them this month. Also, for districts with several schools, please coordinate between the 3 shifts to ensure all schools receive at least 1 visit from our department. Complete the survey below after you make your pre-plan tour. Take notes as you walk the school and consider RTF operations based on each building.
FIRE RESCUE 1 ACADEMY-MARCH
This year we will begin assigning different classes through the FireRescue1 Academy website that is provided to us by Lake Health. Please email Lt. Bittner if you have any trouble with your account. Assigned classes must be completed by the due date provided
The current topic is EMS Response to Active Shooter Incidents (ALS). Please follow the link and log into your account on the Fire Rescue1 Academy website. This course needs to be completed by all members by
April 1, 2018.

A Mentor Resident named Jenna Newman has provided us with an new set of icon cards to aid in communication with patients with special needs or those who have limited verbal capabilities. Please review the document below and make yourself familiar with the cards so they are useful if the need arises. There is a set on each squad.
INTERACTING WITH THE MENTALLY ILL
In a related topic concerning difficult patient communication, this months continuing education assignment covers interacting with those who have a mental illness. Review the related Lake Health Protocols linked below and complete the following FireRescue1 module by November 1, 2018

Summer Training
MANDATORY RESCUE TASK FORCE AWARENESS TRAINING
Effective April 1, 2019, all Ohio EMS providers (EMR, EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic) will be required to complete the Rescue Task Force Awareness Training Module (RTF) as part of the continuing education (CE) necessary for Ohio EMS certificate renewal. This module shall be completed during each EMS provider’s first full recertification cycle starting on or after April 1, 2019. Providers will not be required to repeat the training module during each subsequent renewal period – only the first renewal period starting on or after April 1, 2019.
We have had a good amount of training on this topic as a department, however this is required training set forth by the Ohio DPS. You cannot re-certify if you do not have this specific training module complete! Below is the instructions on how to enroll in the course and the link to the training site.
STANDARD EVOLUTIONS
We will be rolling out several standard training evolution's this year as a way to test competency of all members as well as create a standardized operational environment department-wide. There will be 2 Engine Operations and 1 Truck Operations exercises rolled out this month and evaluated in June for all members. Please review the following documents and begin to prepare for these evaluated drills. There will be instructional videos to follow as well as other supportive information well in advance of any live graded exercises.

CREATING CHANGE IN THE FIRE SERVICE
Use your account for the Fire Hero Learning Network website linked below. Complete the Creating Change in the Fire Service program and submit your certificate to the Training Officer. This is the 4th course of 4 that will earn you the Emergency Services Risk Reduction Program Certificate. Remember to complete a training report in the Aegis System as well.

APRIL-MAY TRAINING
Please create an account for the Fire Hero Learning Network website linked below. Complete the COMMUNICATION AND MENTORING FOR COMPANY OFFICERS program and submit your certificate to the Training Officer. Remember to complete a training report in the Aegis System as well.
Additionally, please complete the WMD/Terrorism Awareness for Emergency Responders program through the Texas A&M Extension Service. You will need to set-up or use your FEMA Student ID for the course. You can retrieve this or create one by following the FEMA SID link below. The TEEX registration site will ask you for this number when you are registering for the WMD course. Please submit this certification as well upon completion and enter a training report. If you already have the AWR160 training just send me your cert. You can also pre-test out of the class. You will see it is not very difficult but this is a certification we all should have.
MAY - JUNE IN-SERVICE DRILLS
The first in service drill for the months of May and June of 2018 will cover our thermal imaging cameras. There is a short presentation as well as a video displaying how to conduct the drill. Try to follow the evolution as it is presented at least initially and then feel free to add to it as you wish to enrich the training exercise. The manual for the K50 is also included below in case there are any questions or operational issues with the camera. Ziploc bags will be sent to all stations to use for the drill (9 bags-3 per shift).
The second drill for May-June 2018 is hands-on operation of the Ram XD Portable Monitor. Read the instructions provided below and watch the riveting video provided by Elkhart Brass. Deploy the line and have all members physically operate and become comfortable with use of this appliance.

Winter Training
All officers are required by NFPA 1021 to have some basic level of training on fire investigation Since this is an area we definitely fall short on, we are going to complete a nationally recognized training course on the topic. Set up a free account on CFITrainer.net and complete the course titled "Fire Investigation for Fire Officers". Please submit the certificate to Lt. Bittner upon completion.
AFTER ACTION REVIEW
Use your account for the Fire Hero Learning Network website linked below. Complete the After Action Review program and submit your certificate to the Training Officer. This is the 3rd course of 4 that will earn you the Emergency Services Risk Reduction Program Certificate. Remember to complete a training report in the Aegis System as well.
Radio Procedures
Please review the Mentor Fire Department Procedure on radio usage and terms. Review as a shift or individually and be sure to utilize the terms and comply with the intent of the order. Company officers are encouraged to use this procedure as part of an extended exercise on best practices for radio communications. After reviewing the procedure, complete the exercises below to become comfortable and proficient with critical and hazard zone radio transmission. Please submit the acknowledgement form individually when you have reviewed and fully understand the procedure. Complete drill reports to reflect the time spent on this topic.
PART 2
Radio Position Drill / Size-Up Sims
Utilize the following linked documents and illustrations
in numbered order to conduct the SCBA Radio Usage exercise created by BC Keidel. Complete the training and then have each member submit the survey. After every member has performed the exercise, review the TYPES OF RADIO TRANSMISSIONS document. Utilize this as a guide to facilitate the last portion of this training (Simulated Size-up) and to discuss each type of report and when to apply them.
As a shift with each member individually performing the exercise on "talk-around" and another member acting as "dispatch", utilize the 4 simulation buildings linked below to conduct an appropriate Blue Card size-up, a follow-up report and make orders for the first 2 companies/lines as the initial IC. Right click on the sim video and select "loop" after you open the file. If the video won't open, right click and select "preview", it should play and you are still able to loop the sim.

Ambulance Isolation Kits
We have provided each station with the capabilities to set up their squad as an isolation unit (just as 1182 is currently arranged). The kits contain all the necessary supplies to quickly provide infections disease patient isolation while retaining the ability to quickly render patient care. Please watch the video below which provides a quick walk-thru of the set-up process and details the contents of each kit. Familiarize yourself with the process so it can be quickly accomplished if it is needed.
Spray Gun Decontamination
As an option for thorough ambulance and equipment decontamination, we have provided a system with disinfectant solution and a paint sprayer to utilize. View the presentation below for a quick overview of its use. Wear proper PPE and mask electronics before use! There is no set procedure for when to use this equipment but use your discretion on when you feel it is needed. In the morning before equipment checks, after a transport of a suspected or confirmed viral patient or after a busy spell of transports would all be appropriate times.
